The Center of Portugal has gained a new charm in recent years. Sandomil is known for its legend: "At the time of the Roman invasions, the invading troops were successively defeated by the bravery of the Hermínios, commanded by Viriato, in the foothills of Serra da Estrela. In one of the onslaughts to conquer the lands bordering the banks of the Alva River, when they approached Sandomil, they did not count on the bravery of its inhabitants who handed them a tremendous defeat. In retreat, the Romans debated whether or not to return to the charge, saying to each other that it would not be worth it, because against such defenders, "not even being a thousand" ("Sandomil") would beat them.
